Biography

Inaya Hodeib is a Lebanese painter and mixed-media artist born in Beirut in 1983. Her practice engages themes of memory, nostalgia, and cultural preservation. She studied painting and sculpture at the Lebanese University’s Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut, graduating in 2006, where she was mentored by Mohammad El Rawas and Fouad Jawhar. In 2007, Hodeib was also mentored by Helen Khal in her private studio in Beirut.

Working primarily in oil, watercolor, resin, and gold-leaf assemblage, Hodeib reconstructs everyday objects, portraits, and urban scenes from recollection, often painting entirely from memory. Her earlier works from 2013 revisit the objects and images that shaped Lebanon’s recent history, while later works employ satire and autoportraiture as a projection of her inner state and contemporary life.

Hodeib has exhibited internationally since the mid-2000s, with group presentations at Beirut Art Center (Beirut, 2013), Ayyam Gallery (Beirut, 2012; Dubai, 2011), Ostra Gallery (Stockholm, 2008), The Rainbow Experience (Cape Town, 2010), Eye Film Institute (Amsterdam, 2014), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, 2014), and Wies Willemsen Gallery (Amsterdam, 2014) and Ramfjord Gallery (Oslo).

Her paintings are held in major institutional and private collections, including the Ramzi and Saeda Dalloul Art Foundation (Beirut), Marwan Toufic Assaf Collection (Beirut), Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah), Mokbel Art Collection (Dubai), Mana Contemporary Art Center (New Jersey).
